About Our Spring Roller Hockey Leagues
|
|
As past and current professional hockey players, we know the importance of summer hockey training. We also know how crucial it is for players to work on their individual skills and game-play creativity, while decreasing the risk of hockey burn-out.
We cannot stress enough the importance of skill creativity at the youth level. We strongly believe that roller hockey gives players this advantage, which will propel them above the rest. We've experienced this first hand throughout our own hockey careers. You could hear the same from the numerous high school, college, and professional players that have used roller hockey as a training tool; players like Connor McDavid (Oilers), Connor Bedard (Blackhawks), Gavin McKenna (USA), Pat Maroon (Lightning), Jason Zucker (Wild), Bobby Ryan (Senators), Paul Stastny (Avalanche), TJ Oshie (Blues) and 100’s others.

Cross-training in roller hockey can offer several benefits to ice hockey players, enhancing their overall athleticism and performance. Here are some advantages of incorporating roller hockey into the training regimen for ice hockey players:
- Skating Skills Improvement: Roller hockey requires different skating techniques due to the surface differences between roller rinks and ice rinks. Engaging in roller hockey can improve a player's agility, balance, and overall skating skills, translating to enhanced performance on the ice.
- Increased Cardiovascular Fitness: Roller hockey is a fast-paced sport that involves continuous movement, contributing to improved cardiovascular fitness. This can enhance an ice hockey player's endurance and stamina on the ice.
- Quick Decision-Making: The dynamic nature of roller hockey, with its smaller playing surface and fast pace, demands quick decision-making. Ice hockey players can benefit from honing their ability to make split-second decisions and react swiftly to changing situations.
- Puck Handling and Shooting Skills: Roller hockey often uses a ball instead of a puck, requiring players to adapt their puck-handling and shooting techniques. This can enhance a player's overall stickhandling precision and shooting accuracy on the ice.
- Positional Awareness: The confined space of a roller rink can improve a player's positional awareness. Learning to navigate and make plays in tight spaces can translate to better on-ice performance, especially in situations with crowded or confined areas.
- Teamwork and Communication: Roller hockey, like ice hockey, is a team sport that requires effective communication and teamwork. Playing roller hockey can reinforce these skills, fostering better coordination and cooperation among players.
- Versatility and Adaptability: Roller hockey may have different rules and strategies compared to ice hockey. Engaging in both sports enhances a player's versatility and adaptability, making them more well-rounded and effective in various playing environments.
- Off-Season Training Option: Roller hockey can serve as a valuable off-season training option for ice hockey players. It allows them to stay active and maintain their skills during periods when ice rinks may not be readily available.
- Injury Prevention: The lower-impact nature of roller hockey compared to ice hockey can be beneficial for injury prevention. Engaging in roller hockey provides a way to continue training while reducing the risk of certain injuries associated with the physical demands of ice hockey.
- Enjoyment and Motivation: Cross-training in roller hockey can add variety to a player's training routine, making workouts more enjoyable and motivating. The change of scenery and different challenges can keep athletes engaged and enthusiastic about their training.
